America's First Liligers To Go On Exhibit
Wynnewood, OK - (PR Buzz) -- April 4th, 2014
This weekend The GW Zoo presents the first ever Liligers born in the U.S. Doors open at 9am, the zoo will close at 7pm. Cost is $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for kids.
For years G.W. Zoo's Entertainment Director, Joe Exotic, has been working on breeding the Liligers, a hybrid of a lion and a tiger. One morning a male lion and a female liger finally gave birth to 3 extraordinary, healthy female ligers named Misty, Lefty and Itsy.
“This is how a new species evolves, even in the wild.” Exotic said. “There isn’t enough room even in the wild for them to do this, so a captive breeding program is the only way to introduce a new species into the world.”
Joe Exotic has also been working with researchers at The American Captive Exotic Feline Repository on the project. They are exploring this new species with care to make sure it is a healthy, robust animal.
The first known hybrid, a female liliger named Kiara, was born at the Novosibirsk Zoo in Russia, in September 2012. Kiara was born to 8-year-old female liger Zita and male African lion Samson. Tomorrow Oklahoma residents will be able to see the first iligers born and bred in the U.S.
Festivities will include a 30 minute magic show at 11:30am. Joe Exotic will give a personal tour of the park at 2:30pm. The G.W. Zoo is located at 25803 NCR 3250, Wynnewood OK 73098. From I-35 take exit 64 south of OKC.
